Why it matters

Series is a shortcut, not a ranking. Paramont and Vision both span the full catalog and overlap heavily on capability, so on a new site the choice usually comes down to the specific model that fits the application rather than the line it sits in. Where series matters most is on an existing site: staying in the line a customer already runs keeps the recorder, the app and the interface consistent, which cuts training and support calls after the install. The narrower lines — Secure, Elevate, Ultra, Milesight — exist for a specific requirement, so they select themselves when that requirement is on the table.

Why it matters

Resolution decides whether footage is useful as evidence or just useful as a record. A 2MP camera tells you someone was there; a 4K camera at the same distance tells you who. But higher resolution costs storage and bandwidth, so the right answer is driven by distance and purpose — a wide parking lot overview and a camera watching a cash drawer have different requirements.

The higher-megapixel panoramic units are often the cheaper answer overall: one 12MP camera can replace three 4MP cameras and the three cable runs that come with them.

How many cameras the recorder can accept. A 16-channel NVR records up to 16 cameras.

Why it matters

Channel count is the most common sizing question, and the most common place a job gets undersized. Count the cameras going in today, then add room — sites almost always grow, and adding a second recorder later costs far more than sizing up once at the start. The jump from 16 to 32 channels is usually a small percentage of total system cost and buys years of headroom.

Why it matters

This is not the same as channel count, and it trips people up constantly. A 16-channel NVR with 8 PoE ports records 16 cameras but only powers 8 of them directly — the other 8 need a separate PoE switch.

Built-in ports mean plug and play: the camera powers up, gets an address, and appears on screen with no network configuration. On smaller jobs that removes a switch from the bill of materials entirely. On larger jobs, or where cameras sit far from the rack, a recorder with no PoE ports paired with dedicated switches is often the better design. Browse PoE switches →

Why it matters

This is the upgrade path for a customer with an existing coax system. They keep every analog camera they already have and add IP cameras where the detail actually matters — the entrance, the register, the loading dock — without rewiring the building or replacing working equipment.

It turns a full system replacement into a phased upgrade, which is a much easier conversation and a much easier budget approval.

06 Signal Format 6

Why it matters

Walking into an existing site, you often do not know which HD-over-coax standard the previous installer used, and the labels are long gone. A universal-port recorder removes the guesswork: plug in whatever is on the wire and it works.

That alone can turn a half-day of troubleshooting into a ten-minute swap, and it means one recorder on the truck covers any service call.

07 Camera Style 17

The physical form of the camera, which drives where and how it mounts.

Why it matters

Style is the part of the spec the customer actually sees every day, so it carries weight beyond the technical. Bullets announce that a property is monitored, which is the point in a parking lot. Domes and turrets disappear into a ceiling, which is the point in a restaurant or a lobby.

Turrets have quietly become the default for most jobs — they aim as easily as a bullet, sit as cleanly as a dome, and dodge the reflected-IR haze domes get when the bubble gets dusty. Specialty forms exist because certain sites have no good answer otherwise: an elevator cab needs a wedge, and a corner-mounted fisheye covers a room no four cameras could cover cleanly.

Why it matters

AI is the difference between footage you have to watch and footage that tells you something. Traditional motion detection fires on rain, headlights, branches and shadows, so operators stop trusting the alerts and stop looking at them. Detection that knows a person from a car cuts that noise down to events worth acting on.

The second payoff is time after the fact. Finding one incident in a week of recording used to mean scrubbing through it. With metadata and search, the same job is a filter — a person, in this area, wearing this color — and it takes minutes.

For the customer the argument is rarely the technology. It is that the system gets used. A site that only reviews footage after a loss gets a fraction of the value of one that gets an alert while it is happening.

Detection that runs on the camera and is passed through to the recorder. The recorder stores, displays and searches these events but does not generate them — the capability comes from the camera at the other end of the cable.

The camera and the recorder must be in the SAME series for camera-side AI to come through. Video will work across series; the detections will not.

Why it matters

This group exists to answer the question that causes the most confusion on a quote: where does the AI actually live?

If the detection runs on the camera, the recorder does not need to generate it — it only needs to store, display and search it. A modest recorder paired with capable cameras can deliver features a dealer might otherwise try to buy at the head end.

That only works when the camera and the recorder are in the same series. Camera-side AI is not portable across lines: put a camera from one series on a recorder from another and the video will come through, but the detection events and the search built on them will not. The same limit applies to third-party equipment. ONVIF is the industry standard that lets cameras and recorders from different manufacturers connect at all, and it does its job — video, and usually PTZ and recording. The AI is where it stops, because detection events and their metadata are largely manufacturer-specific. A perfect picture with none of the smart features is the normal outcome, not a fault.

The practical rule when specifying: decide which side of the system the feature needs to live on, and keep the camera and recorder in the same series whenever the AI is the reason for the sale. A recorder that lists a detection under its own AI does it regardless of what camera is connected. A recorder that lists it here needs matching cameras. Getting that backwards is how a system ships with a good picture and none of the features that sold it.

10 Facial Recognition 3

How far the system goes with faces. The three tiers do genuinely different jobs, and the wording matters when a customer asks whether a system can identify someone.

Why it matters

This is the feature customers most often ask for by name and most often mean something different by. Someone who says they want facial recognition usually wants one of three things: a clear picture of who came in, an alert when a specific banned individual returns, or a searchable record they can go back through later.

Pinning that down first avoids the two expensive mistakes — selling identification where capture would have been enough, or selling capture where the customer expected the system to name people.

The tools for finding a moment in recorded footage. This is where a system either saves an operator hours or costs them an afternoon.

Why it matters

Every camera on a site records. What separates a system people actually use from one they resent is how long it takes to find the ten seconds that matter.

The realistic scenario is a manager who knows roughly when something happened and has other work to do. With timestamp scrubbing, that is half an hour and a good chance of missing it. With area search or thumbnails, it is a couple of minutes. With attribute search it is a filter.

This is also the part of the system the customer touches most after the install, so it drives whether they come back for the next building. Worth demonstrating rather than listing.

12 Night Vision 5

Why it matters

Most incidents happen at night, so this is where a camera either earns its place or does not. The question that decides the option is what the footage has to prove.

Black and white infrared is enough to establish that someone was there and what they did. It will not give you the color of a jacket or a car, and color is often the detail that matters in a report. Where color matters after dark, the answer is either a sensor sensitive enough to hold it or a light to supply it.

Always-on white light has a side effect worth flagging to the customer before install rather than after: it is visible, it changes how a property looks at night, and neighbors notice. That is exactly why the AI-triggered option exists — the light is dark until something is actually there, so the site stays unlit while still recording in color when it counts. It also doubles as a deterrent, since a light coming on tells someone they have been seen.

Why it matters

Fixed lens cameras are cheaper, simpler, and right whenever the view is known and will not change — a doorway, a corridor, a register. Most of the catalog is fixed lens for that reason.

The argument for motorized is labor. Getting a fixed camera's view wrong means going back up the ladder; getting a motorized camera's view wrong means a few clicks from the office. On a high mount, a lift job, or a site an hour away, one adjustment pays the difference. It also leaves room for the site to change — a fence moves, a parking layout is restriped, a tenant reconfigures — without touching the hardware.

Optical zoom is a different job. It exists where detail is needed at distance and digital zoom would only enlarge a blur. Worth pointing out to customers that digital zoom on a fixed camera adds nothing that was not already recorded.

Why it matters

These are the features that win the jobs other people cannot quote. Every one of these exists because a normal camera could not solve a particular problem, which makes this the section to check when a site does not fit the usual pattern.

The wide-area options are the most commonly under-used. One multi-sensor or panoramic camera can replace three or four cameras, and more to the point three or four cable runs, mounts and terminations. On a warehouse ceiling, a historic building or an outdoor pole, where running cable is the expensive part, that math often decides the design on its own — and it usually comes in under the multi-camera quote it replaces.

The rest tend to be requirement-driven: a refinery needs explosion-proof, a parking operation needs LPR, an evidence-handling customer needs watermarking. When one of these is on the table it is rarely negotiable, so asking early turns a specialty requirement into the reason you win the bid rather than a surprise that costs you one.

Audio is the most commonly skipped part of a system and the one customers most often wish they had afterward. Video tells you what happened; audio frequently tells you why, and it is often what turns an ambiguous clip into a clear account of an incident.

Two-way audio changes what the system is for. A camera that can only watch is a record. This is the group that decides whether a camera is still working in year five, and it is where cutting cost quietly creates a warranty problem and a return visit.

The IP ratings are worth explaining plainly to customers, because the numbers look interchangeable and are not. IP65 is fine under a soffit. IP66 is the honest outdoor rating for a wall in open weather. The arithmetic is worth doing at the quote rather than the install: channels, resolution, frame rate and how many hours a day there is actually motion to record. Why it matters

Hard drives in a recorder run continuously for years, and drives fail. On a standard recorder that means the footage from the failed drive is gone and nobody notices until it is needed.

Redundancy changes what a failure costs. With RAID, a drive dies and the recording carries on; with hot swap, it is replaced without stopping; with a redundant power supply, the same is true of the part that takes the whole unit down. For a customer whose footage is evidence — a bank, a cannabis operation, a hospital, anywhere regulated — that is not a premium feature, it is the requirement.

The per-bay capacity numbers matter for a practical reason: a four-bay recorder supporting 26TB drives holds far more than a four-bay recorder capped at 16TB. When retention is the goal, check the drive ceiling and not just the bay count.

Why it matters

This is the group most likely to matter to the customer's IT department.

Dual NIC is the answer to the objection you will actually hear. Cameras generate constant traffic, and no network administrator wants that on the same network as their business systems, nor cameras exposed to the wider network. Two ports lets the cameras sit on their own isolated network while the recorder remains reachable from the business side — which turns a security concern into a design decision and gets the project approved.

Port speed is a capacity question. A large system with many high-resolution cameras streaming live to several viewers at once can saturate a 10/100 connection, and the symptom is stuttering live view that looks like a camera fault rather than a network limit.

Certifications and procurement standards the product meets. On the jobs where these apply, they are not preferences — they decide whether a product can be used at all.

Why it matters

This is the fastest filter in the guide to know about, because on the projects where it applies it is the first question rather than the last. A product that does not carry the required certification cannot be quoted at all, no matter how well it fits.

The reach is wider than people expect. Federal buildings are the obvious case, but the same requirements follow federal money — into schools, universities, municipal projects, transit authorities, healthcare systems and any contractor working on a federal site. Plenty of customers are subject to it without realizing, and finding out after equipment is installed means removing it.

TAA is the stricter of the two, and it carries NDAA with it, so a TAA compliant product clears both requirements. Filtering on compliance at the start of a government or institutional project keeps the whole design inside what can actually be purchased — and being the distributor who raises it before the bid rather than after is worth a great deal to a dealer who works in that space.

UL listing is a different kind of requirement. It is what an inspector, an insurer or a facility standard looks for, and it comes up on commercial projects that have nothing to do with government work.

Why it matters

Firmware is how a product gets better after it ships — bug fixes, stability improvements, new capability on hardware the customer already owns. The problem has always been getting it installed. Updating by hand means downloading a file, getting to the unit, and doing it correctly, which is why so much equipment in the field is running whatever shipped on it years ago.

Pulling updates over the internet removes the trip. For a dealer with installs spread across a region, that is the difference between a fix being available and a fix being applied — no truck roll, no scheduling around the customer, no site running old firmware because nobody had a reason to drive out.

It also matters for security. Firmware updates frequently close vulnerabilities, and a device sitting on a customer's network years out of date is the kind of thing an IT department will eventually ask about. Being able to say the system keeps itself current is a straightforward answer to a question that is getting asked more often.

Why it matters

Remote access used to be the hardest part of an install. Port forwarding meant getting into the customer's router, working around an ISP, and often calling their IT provider — and it broke again whenever the internet address changed.

QR code connection removed that entirely. Scan the code in the app and the system is reachable, with nothing opened on the router and nothing to reconfigure later. For a dealer it saves hours on site; for the customer it is the difference between a system they check from their phone and one they only ever see in the office.

HTTPS is worth raising on any site where the customer has an IT department or handles regulated data, since encrypted access is increasingly something their policy requires rather than something they ask for.

Why it matters

Software is what the customer actually touches. They will look at the camera specification once, at the quote, and then use the app every week for the next five years — so this is what forms their opinion of the system and what they say about it when someone asks for a recommendation.

Free is the point worth making explicitly, because it is not the industry norm. Plenty of systems charge per camera, per user, or by annual subscription just to keep viewing what the customer already owns. Included apps and management software remove a recurring cost from the comparison, and on a multi-site customer that difference compounds every year.

Browser support without a plugin is a small line that solves a real problem. Plugin-based access breaks with every browser update and is frequently blocked outright by IT policy, which turns into a support call that is not really the dealer's fault but is certainly the dealer's afternoon.
